Extra UPDATE - December 5 Dear Fellow Member, I warned you that there might be an extra newsletter in early December! I am sure that you have in the past been asked ‘Why are there two organisations for Brook Green?’ You may have been hard put to distinguish between us, the Brook Green Association, over 40 years old; and the Friends of Brook Green, founded quite recently. You may belong to both. We are now considering ways of ending this anomaly, and so for some time the leaders of the two bodies have been meeting, looking for any sticking points which might prevent the two coming together as one. We have already been working well together in the Vision Implementation Group (VIG) for about a year. We have found no real obstacles, but we have taken legal advice about our constitutional position, and are working out whether it may be desirable to accommodate two types of membership. The two bodies have similar aims and complementary strengths; together we ought to be an even more effective organisation than we are now. We hope it may be possible to present a proposal for your consideration and, if appropriate, approval at our AGM in March 2012. Meanwhile we shall try to keep our website updated so that you can follow and join in any debate. We should welcome any comments you have to make. The crocuses are already out on the Green, and Christmas seems long ago. We are delighted to welcome a new co-opted member of our committee, David Whitehouse Q.C., whom many of you will remember for his sparkling lecture a couple of years ago. He has now retired, and we shall benefit from his energy and wide local knowledge. Talks about the merger with the Friends of Brook Green are going on. We have put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions, which you will find at the end of this letter. We do hope you will read them and let us have your comments. Please keep an eye on this website, as the issues will be aired and debated here too. Planning: The Council has withdrawn the offer to sell a flying lease to the Jacques Prevert School. The Town Hall Scheme has been called in by the Mayor of London for further consultation. The BGA wrote to the Council about the Nomis studio development and about the Article 4 breaches as mentioned in the last letter. The dark grey paint on 5 Dunsany Road is now subject to a planning application, ref: 2012/00060/FUL: 5 Dunsany Road London W14 0JP. Should you wish to comment, more details are available on:LBHF We also wrote to and attended the Planning appeal in Kensington and Chelsea to object to the proposal to place 3 advertising LED screens on the grass patch at the SW corner of the Holland Road roundabout; it is not on our area, but most of our drivers have to use that roundabout, and we thought extra distractions would be dangerous. The Hammersmith Flyover now has one lane open in each direction, for light traffic only. TfL say that the full repairs may take four months to complete. Music: The Spezzati have a full programme of concerts to be given in St Matthew’s Church on Masbro Road, starting with Mozart chamber music on Saturday 28th January at 7.30 and Handel’s Messiah on 31st March. Other concerts follow on 19th May and on 20th, 21st and 22nd July, (one is in the church of St John the Baptist in Holland Road). Details will be on their website www.spezzati.com and there will be posters, but do make a note of the dates. Literary Festival: The Godolphin and Latymer School are holding their annual festival of books on the weekday evenings Monday 6th to Friday 10th of February at 7.00 p.m. This year’s title is ‘An Uncertain Future’, and the list of lecturers is impressive. You can find out more on festival of books Recycling etc. Batteries and small electrical items can be left for recycling at the Hammersmith library. Our next committee meeting will be on 6th February; let me know if there is anything you would like us to consider. Gilia Slocock (7602 3792)email Gilia What does the Association do?
